Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker BYD has introduced a groundbreaking fast-charging system that it claims can charge EVs as quickly as it takes to refill a petrol tank. The new "Super E-Platform" boasts peak charging speeds of 1,000 kW, enabling cars to travel up to 400km (249 miles) on just a five-minute charge. This charging speed is twice as fast as Tesla's latest superchargers, which offer up to 500 kW.

BYD's CEO, Wang Chuanfu, announced that the company will build more than 4,000 ultra-fast charging units across China to support this new platform. The system will debut in two new models: the Han L sedan and Tang L SUV, priced from 270,000 yuan ($37,330). This innovation aims to eliminate "charging anxiety" by making EV charging times comparable to traditional petrol refueling times.

This development is significant in the EV industry, as fast-charging technology is crucial for increasing EV adoption. BYD's advancements also pose a challenge to competitors like Tesla, which has been struggling with declining stock prices and increased competition from more affordable Chinese EV models.
